Tomar
The Last Major of Tomar, also known as António, Prior of Crato, was a key figure in the Portuguese succession crisis of 1580. After the death of King Sebastian I of Portugal, António emerged as a candidate for the throne. He was supported by the nobility, who were concerned about the possibility of Spanish domination over Portugal. António was elected as the king by the Portuguese Cortes in 1580, but his reign was short-lived. The Spanish king, Philip II, invaded Portugal and defeated António in the Battle of Alcântara. António fled to France, where he continued to claim the Portuguese throne until his death in 1595.
