Alcobaça
Alcobaça is a municipal district and a town located approximately 100 Km north of Lisbon, between the rivers Alcoa and Baça. Alcobaça is small, modest and very very pleasant, but the history of the town is marked by the presence of almost 700 years of the Cistercian Order. The city of Alcobaça became notable after the first king of Portugal, Afonso I de Portugal, decided to build a church to commemorate the Conquest of Santarém from the Moors in 1147. The church later evolved into the Monastery of Alcobaça, one of the most magnificent gothic monuments in the country. In the church are the tombs of Pedro I of Portugal and his murdered mistress Inês de Castro. Behind its amazing Baroque facade, there is a luminous forest of simple Cistercian arches. Beside, the arches open to a set of patios, kitchens and antique monastic chambers.
